What is Navratri Puja?
Navratri, meaning "nine nights," is one of the most significant festivals in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga in her nine divine forms, collectively known as the Navdurga. Over the course of nine days, devotees invoke each form of the goddess in sequence, seeking her blessings for strength, protection, prosperity and the removal of negativity from their lives and homes. In North Indian tradition, Navratri is observed with particular devotion — daily puja, fasting, chanting of the Durga Saptashati, and elaborate rituals on the opening and closing days.
Pandit Hariom Shastri performs Navratri Puja at homes across Bangalore, beginning with Ghatasthapana, the ceremonial establishment of the sacred kalash on the first day, which marks the formal beginning of the nine-day worship. A jyoti (lamp) is lit and kept burning throughout the festival as a symbol of the goddess's continuous presence in the home, and daily aarti and puja are performed to honour each form of the Navdurga in turn.
Every step of the puja is explained clearly to the family in Hindi as it happens, so that even those unfamiliar with the Sanskrit mantras understand the significance of each ritual — from the daily offerings to the final Kanya Pujan, where young girls are worshipped as living forms of the goddess before the festival concludes with Navami Havan and Vijayadashami celebrations.
