What is Navgrah Puja?

Navgrah Puja is a Vedic ceremony dedicated to the nine celestial bodies, or grahas, that Hindu astrology holds to influence every aspect of a person's life — health, career, relationships, wealth and mental peace. According to Vedic astrology, the position of these nine grahas at the time of a person's birth shapes their horoscope, and unfavourable planetary periods or afflictions are believed to bring obstacles, delays or difficulties. Navgrah Puja is performed to pacify any malefic influence among the nine planets and to strengthen the benefic ones, restoring balance to a person's life and surroundings.

Pandit Hariom Shastri performs Navgrah Puja at homes across Bangalore following the correct Vedic sequence — beginning with sankalp to state the family's specific intention, followed by invocation of Lord Ganesha, and then individual worship of each of the nine planetary deities in turn, each with its own mantra, offerings and colour of cloth or flowers associated with it. The puja typically concludes with a havan, where specific samagri linked to each graha is offered into the sacred fire to formally seek its blessings and pacification.

This puja is often recommended by astrologers during a person's Sade Sati (the seven-and-a-half-year period of Saturn's influence), during an unfavourable dasha or mahadasha period, or simply as a periodic practice to maintain planetary harmony. Families in Bangalore also choose to include a short Navgrah Puja as part of larger ceremonies such as Grih Pravesh or before an important family milestone, to ensure the planetary energies around the occasion remain favourable.
